His next release is "New York", a Yash Raj film directed by Kabir Khan, co-starring John Abraham and Katrina Kaif. But Neil Nitin Mukesh has no qualms about doing an off-beat film like Sudhir Mishra's "Tera Kya Hoga Johnny".
"I am passionate about acting and to me a film is a film. These days, films get classified as commercial or off beat based on the budget, but all I want is to do good, strong roles and work with honesty. If I worried about being stereotyped I would never have become an actor," said the emerging star, who was at the Dubai International Film Festival with Mishra, on December 17, to promote the film, slated for release in April 2009.
The film's main protagonist, Johnny played by Sikander Agarwal is a tea boy on the streets of Mumbai, who dreams of having a better life in Dubai. Johnny's hopes of making it in life are pinned on the fortunes of three people he admires – Parvez, Preeti and Vishal.
Neil plays Parvez, a Muslim boy from Ahmedabad who wants to get rich quick so that he can fulfil his responsibilities and reclaim his love (Shahana Goswami), who is now married to a corrupt cop, (Kay Kay Menon). Preeti (Soha Ali Khan) is a small time model and Vishal (Karan Nath) is her drug addict boy friend.
"All these characters have dreams and they all want to be someone else," said Mishra. The writer-director said that he loves Mumbai and his film is about the spirit of the city – about the real people on the streets and their complex problems, relationships and aspirations.
"The film's title in English, 'Ride the Wave Johnny' aptly conveys the sense of the story of many people who are waiting to ride that one big wave in the game of life," he said. "The film has been shot entirely on the streets of Mumbai and Dubai is just a dream that is never actually shown," he added.
Unlike other Mishra films, this one has some songs composed by Ali Azmat, former member of Pakistani rock band Junoon, and Pankaj Awasthi.

Neil found his role extremely challenging because it was so layered. "I did not prepare too much for the role because I wanted Parvez's angst and the vulnerability beneath his darkness to show through. I could identify with the character because it is in a way the story of any youngster today," said the good looking, soft spoken actor.
He has just completed shooting for "Aa Dekhen Zara", a soft, romantic movie opposite Bipasha Basu and has also recorded a song for the film. "Music is in my blood. I play the piano and compose and would love to do more songs if the composers ask me to," he said.
When asked if his voice resembles his grandfather Mukesh's, the actor said with a smile, "I have been told it sounds more like Kishore Kumar's."
Niel will soon start work on Madhur Bhandrakar's next project, "Jail". More Info
