That A. R. Rahman is performing in the UAE after five years on April 18, in itself is news. However, as befitting background to the concert with the man who believes music, truly transcends all barriers, the organiser of the event, is Iranian.
"It is growing proof of music's powerful ability to go beyond language and culture," Rahman told masala.com on the sidelines of a press conference last evening in Dubai.
At the press conference, when a reporter asked the music composer about the ratio of songs in Hindi to non-Hindi, Rahman responded, "We haven't decided yet. Most of the songs are bi-lingual. At any concert, we generally go by the vibe of the audience and anyway, to a real music-lover, language won't matter at all."
Adding on the language of choice issue, Rahman elaborated to masala.com, "It's a risk we take. In a concert, we really wish to please everybody, but we're also realistic to know that we can't. There will always be that one person who will say we should have done more songs in 'a' particular language."
The concert, which will take place on April 18 will take place at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium, with a capacity of 30,000. Rahman said the show would last between 3 and 4 hours and accompanying him were Chitra (Piya Basanti Re), Hariharan (Tu Hi Re - Bombay), Sadhana Sargam (Chupke Se - Saathiya), percussionist Sivamani, Karthik (Maya Maya - Baba), Blaaze (Saathiya, Kisna), Madhushree (Saathiya, Jodhaa-Akbar), Naresh Iyer (Rubaru - Rang De Basanti), Mohammed Aslam (Guru, Rang De Basanti), Javed Ali (Jashne Bahara - Jodhaa Akbar), Benny Dayal (Sivaji - The Boss).
The composer, whose music has been observed to increasingly incorporate Sufi elements, explained that to him, "Sufi was an unwavering love for God and the spiritual leader."
Having recently announced the opening of the first music conservatory in India, named after the most famous Sufi saint of the Chishti order - Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti - Rahman said his involvement in the project would not be limited to an announcement.
"I'm the principal and also drawing up the curricula. Basically I felt that the role of the musician in the world is changing. In India especially, I thought the time was right and the need existed for a place that would educate them on various other aspects related to the music industry. We start in June and in a year we should have a degree programme as well," said Rahman on his K M Music Conservatory, which is based in Chennai.
"For sure I will be much more selective of the film projects I take as I will be closely working with the Conservatory," he added.
